School Programs

Programs and resources that are available free-of-charge to schools in the unincorporated area of Sacramento County are described below. We encourage teachers, students and administrators to use these resources and adopt waste management and recycling as part of environmental studies programs.

Curricula

Curricula for elementary and middle school teachers are available from the Department at no charge. Curricula for elementary students focus on the general concepts of the 3 R's as well as composting and landfills. Lessons for middle school students concentrate on history, science, social studies and math and how each relates to the concepts of waste management. All curricula provide hands on exercises for students and meet State curriculum guidelines.

Available curricula are:

  • Teacher's Guide to the 3 R's (K-6 grade, 40 lessons)
  • Borrowed from the Earth - Composting (2-6 grade, 10 lessons)
  • Landfill and Recycling Activities (2-6 grade, 10 lessons)
  • Science and Math Exercises (Middle school, 10 lessons)
  • History and Social Studies Exercises (Middle school, 10 lessons)

Curricula for K-12 grade levels entitled Closing the Loop, workshops and information on waste reduction for school districts, are also available at no charge from the California Integrated Waste Management Board. For more information, visit their web site at www.ciwmb.ca.gov/schools.

Rock Steady Juggling's "Recycling Wizard' School Performances

The Department has a contract with Rock Steady Juggling to provide elementary schools with FREE auditorium style performances that focus on waste reduction, reuse, recycling and composting. County staff is available to make classroom presentations that focus on various waste reduction and recycling efforts.
