How Do I Recycle or Dispose of Wheelchairs / Mobility Devices?
The Sacramento County Department of Waste Management & Recycling offers a program to recycle
discarded wheelchairs and benefit others at the same time. According to the World Health Organization, there is a worldwide
need of 18 million wheelchairs.
The County's North Area Recovery Station
accepts unwanted
non-motorized wheelchairs,
walkers, metal crutches, and metal canes from the public at no charge seven days a week.
The “Wheels for the World” program, serving people with
disabilities and their families, takes the items
collected at the County’s recovery station. Wheelchairs and other
unwanted items are transported to correctional facilities in Colorado, Tennessee, Connecticut,
Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts, where they are restored to like-new condition through an
inmate job-training program. The wheelchairs and similar items are then distributed to needy
persons with disabilities in developing countries.
The County’s North Area Recovery Station is located at 4450 Roseville Road in North Highlands.
The Recovery Station is open Monday through Friday from 6:30 am to 6:00 pm and Saturdays and
Sundays from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.
